Diary of a Middle School Golde, Part One

Hi! My name is Ali, and I am playing Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, which is this year’s Inly Middle School musical production.

We’ve been having rehearsals for about four weeks, and of those four weeks, we have been choreographing the number “Tradition” for about all of them. It’s one heck of a number! We’re all trying like crazy to remember it, and I think we’ve got it now. Everyone moves all over the place and everyone has to know where they have to be at the exact moment and what they have to dance and sing at the same time. It’s crazy!

Speaking of crazy, today we reviewed “The Dream”—it is, you guessed it, a dream sequence. It’s really weird! First, there happen to be musicians magically in Tevye and Golde’s bedroom, then all of Tevye’s dead relatives come out and start singing and dancing. Someone very imaginative must have come up with that one!

When we were rehearsing “The Dream,” I was singing the chorus and I thought I was doing great until Meri-Lee (our music director) said “Stop slurring the words! This isn’t “To Life” you know!” (“To Life” is a scene in a bar; you can guess why everything should be slurred.) I was subconsciously connecting the words together! I have a really, really LOUD voice, so when I make a mistake, you can tell.

Adrienne, a girl in our class, is playing Fruma Sarah, a dead person who interrupts the dream party and threatens to place a curse on the family if one of their daughters marries her (still living) husband. That part was made for her! Adrienne is going to be so good at that part, and it’s going to be really cool! She gets very enthusiastic in the middle, and yells “pearls!” over and over.
